As if in Dreams...

As if in Dreams…

As if in dreams,
I held your hand
And followed you
To wonderland,
Back to the spring
In mountains grand
Where sages taught
And emperors planned
And artists wrought
Their signs in sand.

Your love touched me
With words unplanned
And now I ache
My heart expand
To fill the space
Between us spanned,
Inspired by breath
The bodhi fanned

To wake from dreams

And understand.

This poem went through so many revisions. Thanks to Karol & Arjuna for bearing with me through them all, and giving generous feedback. I only hope this version is at least as good as the previous ones.

  1. As if in Dreams (old-version)

    As if in dreams,
    I held your hand
    And followed you
    To wonderland,
    Where sages taught
    And emperors planned
    And artists wrought
    Their signs in sand.

    As if in dreams
    I cupped your hand
    And drank the source
    In mountains grand,
    With yearning ache
    My heart expand
    To fill the space
    Between us spanned.

    As if in dreams
    I kissed your hand
    And melted heaven
    To understand
    What joyful fate
    To sail unplanned
    That fragrant breath
    The bodhi fanned.

This poem was initially meant to christen http://asifindreams.tumblr.com where I'll be posting dhamma talks and spiritual stuff in future. But the poem out-grew its original intention, and become something quite different — much more like the poetry and quotations on my other site http://karmice.tumblr.com — devoted to beauty!

Jon said: So often spiritual love and desire is reflected in poems of romance and human yearning . . .

Karol said: Wow... Right on and well done So much better than the first drafts. which I apologize for nit picking into oblivion Don't change a word of this one.. C'est Magnifique!!!

    As if in Dreams (even-earlier-version)

    As if in dreams,
    I held your hand
    And followed you
    To wonderland
    Back to the spring
    In mountains grand
    Where Buddha’s words
    Like grains of sand
    Slipped through our grasp
    To understand
    But in their wake
    We sailed unplanned
    The fragrant breath
    The bodhi fanned
    To that far shore
    Forever more,
    Where hearts are free
    And I am thee.

    As if in Dreams (earliest-version)

    As if in dreams,
    I held your hand
    And followed you
    To wonderland
    Back to the spring
    In mountains grand
    Where Buddha wrote
    In grains of sand.
    Your love touched me
    With words unplanned
    And now I ache
    To understand
    That fragrant breath
    The bodhi fanned.
