Music & Meditation (Osho)

The opening and closing videos are by Toumani Diabete, the kora master from Mali, playing Debe alongside the great Ali Farka Touré, and playing Toumani with his Symmetric Orchestra.

Music: Meditation or Intoxication
(Osho)

Which is music for you, meditation or intoxication?

It's a striking question!

WHILE LISTENING TO STRINGED INSTRUMENTS, HEAR THEIR COMPOSITE CENTRAL SOUND; THUS OMNIPRESENCE.

The same! You are hearing an instrument -- a sitar, or anything. Many notes are there. Be alert and listen to the central core, the backbone of it around which all the notes are flowing, the deepest current which holds all the notes together -- that which is central, just like your backbone. The whole body is held by the backbone. Listening to the music, be alert, penetrate the music, and find the backbone of it -- the central thing which goes on flowing, holding everything together. Notes come and go and disappear, but the central core flows on. Become aware of it.

Basically, originally, music was used for meditation; particularly Indian music developed as a method of meditation, Indian dancing developed as a method of meditation. For the doer it was a deep meditation, and for the audience also it was a deep meditation. A dancer or a musician can be a technician. And he can be a great technician, but the soul comes only when the musician is also a deep meditator.

And music is just the outward thing. While playing on his sitar, one is not only playing on his sitar, he is also playing on his alertness inside. The sitar goes on outwardly and his intense awareness moves inside. The music flows outwardly, but he is alert, constantly aware of the innermost core of it. And that gives samadhi. That becomes ecstasy. That becomes the highest peak.

It is said that when the musician has really become the musician, he will break his instrument -- because it is of no use. If he still needs his instrument, he is not a real musician yet. He is just learning. If you can play with music, with meditation, sooner or later the inner music will become more important, and the outer will become not only less important: ultimately it will become a disturbance. You will throw the instrument away from you, because now you have found the inner instrument. But it cannot be found without the outer; with the outer you can become alert more easily. Once you have become alert, leave the outer and move inwards. And for the listener also, the same!

But what are you doing when you listen to music? You are not meditating. On the contrary, you are using music as something like alcohol. You are using it to be relaxed, you are using it for self-forgetfulness. This is the misfortune, the misery: the techniques which were developed for awareness are being used for sleep. And this is how man goes on doing mischief with himself.

If something is given to you which can make you awake, you will use it to make yourself more sleepy. That is why for millennia teachings were kept secret -- because it was thought to be useless to give techniques to a sleepy man. He will use them for sleep; he cannot do otherwise. So techniques were given only to particular disciples who were ready to shake their sleep, who were ready to be shattered out of their sleepiness.

Ouspensky dedicates one book to George Gurdjieff as "the man who disturbed my sleep". Such people ARE disturbers. Persons like Gurdjieff or Buddha or Jesus, they are disturbers. That is why we take revenge upon them. We may have been dreaming beautiful dreams and he comes and disturbs our sleep. We want to kill him. The dream was so beautiful. And if it is beautiful, then it is more dangerous because it can attract you more, it can become a drug.

We have been using music as a drug, dancing as a drug. And if you want to use music and dancing as drugs, then they will become not only drugs for your sleep, they will become drugs for sexuality also. So remember this point: sexuality and sleep go together. When you awake you will be more loving, the whole energy of sex will have been transformed to love.

To summarize:

WHILE LISTENING TO STRINGED INSTRUMENTS, HEAR THEIR COMPOSITE CENTRAL SOUND -- their complete central sound -- THUS OMNIPRESENCE.

And then you will know what is to be known, or what is worth knowing. You will become omnipresent With the music, finding the composite central core, you will become awake, and with that awakening you will be everywhere.

Right now, you are somewhere -- a point which we call the ego. If you can become awake, this point will disappear. You will not be anywhere then, you will be EVERYWHERE -- as if you have become the all. You will have become the ocean, you will have become the infinite.

The finiteness is with the mind.

The infiniteness enters with meditation.

Carrie: Thank you so much, Okei. The sitar video is absolutely beautiful. I could listen to it over and over again. For me, the music is a simultaneous blend of intoxicant and meditation. :)Namaste!
okei: Yeah, it's cool! The kora is like a sitar, but it's a "21-string West African harp".
Denise:
Kathy: The same idea is also the core behind other instruments like Scottish bagpipes. They also have a central, "drone" sound around which the rest of the melody is played. Music certainly does have a way of transporting us, doesn't it? :) Thanks, Okei!! :) Blessings!
okei: Thanks for dropping by, Denise, and Thanks Kathy! They do indeed... and it does, but we are bombarded with music and even bombard ourselves sometimes.
The ease of listening to music, with the transfer to digital, the ability to store thousands of tracks on a small device, instead of just a few as in the past, makes this more true than ever, that it becomes just mindless noise to fill the silence.
And this can be said of anything, even that which is most spiritual, so it's worth paying heed to Osho's warning (extracted from the above):
"If something is given to you which can make you awake, you will use it to make yourself more sleepy. That is why for millennia teachings were kept secret -- because it was thought to be useless to give techniques to a sleepy man. He will use them for sleep; he cannot do otherwise."

Rupa & The April Fishes

Born to Indian parents in California, raised in the US, India & southern France, and leading a double life as musician & doctor, singer/guitarist/composer Rupa Marya and her “polyglot band of musical renegades” concoct an enchanting mix of French nouvelle vague, rousing Latin grooves, Gypsy swing, and dreamy Indian ragas. And to top it all, I just love their intelligent lyrics.

Une Americaine à Paris (An American Woman in Paris)

Guy in the Background:

there are not really differences, I think they are social constructions, we have all the same motivations, the same desires and it's a story of connecting...
a story of speaking, of changing ideas and realizing...
that seems to me the most important thing, and tomorrow morning, you will be smiling

Main Lyrics:
after some days in silence
I did not say a word
and then I met you here in paris
sitting next to me in a bar
you just came from Algiers
and I from San Francisco
the world is crazy between us
you asked
aren't you afraid to be an American woman in Par
is
with all these angry Arabs
I said no, I'm not American
you are not Arab and we are not in Paris
the world is crazy between us
what do you think of this?
what do you think of all these stories?
these stories, these stories make us crazy
you wanted to take your photo with me
I said no thank you, no photo
I prefer life
I'm not American
you're not Arab and we are not in Paris
we are in life
the world is crazy between us
what do you think, what do you think, what do you think
what do you think of all this
what do you think of all these stories?
these stories, these stories make us crazy

Trouble

well i've had a fine fine time
but now the moon and its strange light
have put a question on the table
and i know you know what i mean
i can see it in your eyes as they catch upon
something in me
oh that thing is trouble
oh trouble, yeah trouble, beautiful trouble
why don't you stay
i think that you should go
woah, woah
now don't you think that i don't find
everything about you so divine
but just one more moment here and
i'll be through
it's not your fault
and it's not mine
it's the moon and the sweet light
she brings tonight
oh my love, can't you see
she brings trouble
oh trouble, yeah trouble, beautiful trouble
the more i try to explain
the less i know
woah, woah, oh
(Instrumental)
well, it takes 1 to know one
and it takes 2 to tango
and it takes just a count to 3 to fall
out of time out of time
and the ground starts to dissolve
oh my love can't you see
i'm in trouble
oh trouble, yeah trouble, beautiful trouble
the more i try to explain
the less i know
yeah trouble, yeah trouble, sweet sweet trouble
where do i go i don't know
where do i go
woah, woah

Plus Que Moi (More than me)

Oh ma pauvre tete (oh my poor head)
peut pas comprendre toutes ces choses (can't understand all these things)
esclave de mes pensées betes (slave of my stupid thoughts)
enfermée par les histoires que je compose (enclosed by the stories that I write)
chaque matin, chaque soir (every morning, every evening)
poursuivie par l'idée qu'll faut que je m'explique (pursued by the idea that I must explain myself)
et j'essaie avec des histoires mais (and I try with these stories but)
quoi que je dise je ne dis rien (whatever I might say, I say nothing)
et quoi que je sache je ne sais rien (and whatever I might know, I know nothing)

Donc je les lance dans le fleuve (Therefore, I throw them into the river)
toutes ces histoires qui m'énervent (all these stories that annoy me)
et vois celles qui flottent ou s'enfoncent (and watch which ones float or sink)
parce que le fleuve est plus sage que moi (because the river is wiser than I am)

Et aussi mon estomac (And also my stomach)
devient entortillé autour de mes idées (become entwined around my ideas)
essayant de faire les choses plus nettes (trying to make things clearer)
je trouve que je les fais plus melées (I find that I make them more complicated)

Chaque matin, chaque soir (Every morning, every evening)
je me demande c'est quoi la verité (I ask myself what the truth is)
et j'essaye avec des histoires mais (and I try with these stories but)
quoi que je dise ce n'est pas ca (whatever I might say, it's not that)
c'est pas à moi de raconter ce que l'on ne peut pas (it's not up to me to tell what I cannot)

Donc je les jette dans le ciel (Therefore I throw them into the sky)
moi pieds sur terre tenant le bout de la ficelle (me, feet on the ground, holding the end of the kite)
et vois celles qui tombent ou s'envolent (and I watch which ones fall or fly away)
parce que le ciel est plus honnete que moi (because the sky is more honest than me)

Et quoi que je dise je ne dis rein (And whatever I might say, I say nothing)
et quoi que je sache je ne sais rien (and whatever I might know, I know nothing)
je les raconte a la lune (I tell them to the moon)
ici toute seule, toute la nuit (here, all alone, all night)
et apprends d'elle de la folie (and I learn from her of madness)
parce que la lune sourit plus que moi (because the moon smiles more than me)

Kayleigh Goldsworthy

Kayleigh Goldsworthy’s a fantastic singer who should be better known. Her lyrics are nowhere on the web, so here’s sharing three of her songs.

Tennessee

Well there's a silence when you're looking at me
And I wish I could go back to sleep
But in this moment you won't look beyond the brown behind the black
Wide abyss in my mind and I'm turning back
Into the girl I always wanted me to be
Bathed in my sympathy, I'm begging to be clean
I'll send a postcard as I try to find my way
My ghosts behind me, I know that I'll make it through
And be oka-a-a-a-a-a-ay, be oka-a-a-a-a-ay

There's a light that's up ahead
And I'll be catching it the first thing in the mornin’
I'm on my way
Towards a southern town beneath the stars I'll wander every night
Tennessee, you've been the nicest place to me

Well there's a siren that is deafening
As I try to uncover where I've been
But everybody's second guessing
All the moves their pawns have made
And I laugh to myself at this mess I've made

I'm not the girl I always thought that I would be
And I've stopped holding all my breath on silly things
But all the years I've spent just trying to believe
That I'd make it out of here and on to something only
In my dre-e-e-e-e-e-eams, in my dre-e-e-e-e-eams.

There's a light that's up ahead
And I'll be catching it the first thing in the mornin’
I'm on my way
Towards a southern town beneath the stars I'll wander every night
'Cos Tennessee, you've been the nicest place to me

And I'm on my wa-a-a-ayea-a-a-ay-a-a-a-a-ay
I'm on my wa-a-a-ayea-a-a-ay-a-a-a-a-a-ay
I'm not the girl I always dreamed that I would be
But on my way to there I know I'll surely see
The mile markers as I drive down 65
Take me to somewhere that had always made me feel
Alive, oh alive

'Cos there's a light that's up ahead
And I'll be catching it the first thing in the mornin’
I'm on my way
Towards a southern town beneath the stars I'll wander every night
'Cos Tennessee, you've been the nicest thing to me

Where the Summer Goes

Riding by the river, I don't know where the summer goes
Or why you stayed the night and then you left me all alone
Still, I couldn't stay away even though you wouldn't change
Up your mind or your story in the morning

So these days I stay awake through the twilight every day
Take another hit of something just to ease this pain away
But I couldn't bear to breathe in the dust from when you leave
So I cried and told my heart to just keep beating

Two rights, well they'll never make a wrong
Unless you hold tight to what you shouldn't hold on
Because your mind will cloud the way make you think love's gone away
But cross my heart I'll hope to die before it's ending

Still I'm waiting every day though the answers never came
Tried to reach you through the mess of all mixed signals that you gave
'Cos I wanted to believe that we could have had something
But now I'm learning not to throw myself to the fire so suddenly

'Cos two rights, I don't know what's so wrong
Except you hold tight to fears you shouldn't hold on
And your mind will cloud the way make you believe the lies you say
Just to make you feel better while it's ending

oooh...oo-oo-oo-oo-ooh

You say you'd rather be alone than love someone when you get home
While I understand your reasoning, don't you think I should have known?
But now it's your fucking loss because you don't know what you've got
So I'll find a man who proves to me that now I'm better off

'Cos two rights, well they'll never make a wrong
Unless you hold tight to fears you shouldn't hold on
Because your mind will cloud the way. make you think love's gone away
But cross my heart I'll hope to die before it's ending
Just to make you feel better while it's ending.

Streetlights

It's getting colder than, colder than I've ever been
But that must be why you told me bundle up I guess
Until the streetlights take me in and make me one of them
Until the streetlights take me in and make me whole.

And yes, I miss a man, miss him more but mostly when
He used to call me down the stairs and when he'd take my hand
I used to think no-one would ever make me feel like that
I used to think no-one would ever make me whole

'Cos there's a darkness sleeping next to me
There's a lightness that I can't find
But now I see that you've gone from me
I never heard you leave

Well, I guess I should have left when I heard you talk like that
Well, I must have had you wrong, I thought I heard you laugh
Before the phone call that had ended all I knew of that
Before the phone call that had ended all of that

'Cos there's a darkness sleeping next to me
There's a lightness that I can't find
But now I see that you've gone from me
I never heard you leave

'Cos there's a darkness sleeping next to me
There's a lightness that I can't find
But now I see that you've gone from me
I never saw you leave
I never heard you leave

It's getting colder than, colder than I've ever been
But that must be why you told me bundle up I guess
Until the streetlights take me in and make me one of them
Until the streetlights take me in and take me home.

Emma Stevens (Enchanted Live)

Earlier this week, I was privileged to see Emma Stevens and her band in her first ever headline concert sharing her lovely songs from her album “Enchanted”. It was such a coincidence I happened upon her music online only the previous weekend, then found out the next day she was performing live at The Portland Arms in Cambridge, a venue so close yet I'd never been before, at the corner between Victoria & Milton Road. She was supported beforehand by an up-and-coming Cambridge talent, fresh from his travels around Australia.
There was a really good turn-out and Emma gave a splendid performance. Her beautiful songs and generous spirit left everyone smiling. I had been drawn to her in the first place by her voice and thoughtful lyrics, so it was especially good to hear them brought alive by her presence. In the age of music reduced to a commodity, and the commodity reduced to digital data, there is a huge corresponding demand for a return to the experience. For some, this is the desire of “coming together” and “being there”, but even more than this for me I think is the lovely change to go back to music in its original being, and “being present”. There is however also added excitement in the creation of a memory, and this is what moves me in this blog to re-create it.
Opening with the song “Once”, Emma expresses cynicism at the Disney lie “you only need to find love once”, only then – in finding love – to feel she must re-affirm it. Her most moving song is no doubt “Sunflower”, in which she remembers some of the little things her mother taught her. It was especially good to hear this live. My favourite song from the album was her fairytale love song “A Place Called You”. (The album also has a very pretty fairytale look.) Other highlights included the popping “Riptide”, the chilled-out loving “Lazy” and the upbeat post-holiday “Hey Summer”. Overall her music captures that post-holiday mood of memory of good times in the past, moving through sad moments, upbeat & hopeful, open to love & light in the present & future.
Other memorable episodes of the night included (1) the band putting on sparkly hats for one of the songs, (2) a minor blip in which Emma thought her song “It's Obvious” had obviously gone wrong when for the audience it seemed fine (reminding me of Jai-Jagdeesh‬’s advice “if you hit a wrong note smile and keep on singing”, but also this made me think how the difference between someone like Emma who loves what they do and the cold professional is the first will genuinely smile, learn from the mistake and come back stronger), and (3) when the bassist was picking up feedback of another song between sets,  it seemed to be “Good Vibrations” (how serendipitous to be picking up good vibrations!). These were all like happy unveilings.

By a complete coincidence, this concert, the first of Emma’s “Enchanted Tour”, fell on the second anniversary of her mother passing away. This letting go from the tree of life leaves offspring, friends and relatives behind, who one day will also have to let go in their own way. And though this moment is a sad one, it is also in the imagination of a story that Emma’s sister wrote about the last leaf of autumn, a reaching for the stars in flight, a re-entry into the soil of existence, a new beginning. Without endings, there could be no beginnings. Accompanying the crunch and decay, new dawns await. We wish for Emma and her band that this be the beginning of a long and wonderful adventure on her journey of enchantment, and for many happy journeys to come. “Enchanted”, the name of her album, is an old word via French from Latin, from in-cantare meaning “to sing or cast a spell upon”. The magic therein is a blessing! May love light her way. And yours too!

Emmanuel Pahud & Christian Rivet

I have been dreaming a lot of the sea recently, of my father, of old friends, of long conversations and good company.

It was good to make those dreams real and (apart from the sea) to meet many of them once again these past few days, and perhaps some more in coming days.

Below is an 11 second video I took at Wigmore Hall by the virtuoso flute player Emmanuel Pahud accompanied by Christian Rivet on guitar. They were excellent! I went with my father and one of my earliest friends from schooldays.

It was an eclectic performance varying from the excitement of Piazzolla's tango music to the very modern as if a baby were playing with the instruments, along the way the dulcet tones of Handel and the slavonic dances of Bartok.

This is a full version of the above from a different recording which was played as an encore:
Ibert — Entr'Acte

Finally, a live recording from Pahud's YouTube channel which he also played tonight.

Tu Chiami Una Vita (Salvatore Quasimodo)

Paintings by John William Waterhouse. Set to music by Jan A. P. Kaczmarek. Poem by Salvatore Quasimodo. Sung by April Armstrong. Video by Accabadora.

Salvatore Quasimodo (1901-1968)
— Tu Chiami Una Vita (You Invoke a Life)

Fatica d'amore, tristezza, Labour of love, sadness,
tu chiami una vita You invoke a life
che dentro, profonda, ha nomi That within, deep inside, has names
di cieli e giardini. Of skies and gardens.
E fosse mia carne And were it my flesh
che il dono di male trasforma. Which the gift of sorrow transforms.

Shakira — No

In the final few seconds she stands above the water (like the archetypal Fool at the edge of the unknown) but unlike in "Whenever, Wherever" in which she jumps into the abyss, this time she smiles and turns away. The "No" extends to encompass even the "No" itself! Brilliant!

Shakira
— No lyrics in collaboration with Gustavo Cerati)

No, no intentes disculparte
(No, don't try to excuse yourself)
No juegues a insistir
(Don't play at insisting)

Las excusas ya existían antes de ti

(The excuses were already there before you)

No, no me mires como antes
(No, don't look at me like before,)

No hables en plural
(Don't talk in the plural)
La retórica es tu arma más letal

(Rhetoric is your most lethal weapon)

Voy a pedirte que no vuelvas más
(
I am going to ask you never to return)
Siento que me dueles todavía aquí
(
I feel that that you still hurt me here)
Adentro (Inside)

Y que a tu edad sepas bien lo que es
(And that at your age you know well what it is
)
Romperle el corazón a alguien así

(To break the heart of someone else like this)

No se puede vivir con tanto veneno,
(One cannot live with so much passion)

La esperanza que me da tu amor
(
The hope your love gives me)
No me la dio más nadie

(No one gave me more ever)
Te juro, no miento
(I swear, I do not lie)

No se puede morir con tanto veneno
(One cannot live with so much passion)

No se puede dedicar el alma
(
One cannot devote one's soul)
A acumular intentos
(
Attempting again and again)
Pesa más la rabia que el cemento
(Anger weighs heavier than cement

)

Espero que no esperes que te espere
(I hope you don't expect that I'll wait for you)

Después de mis 26

(After turning twenty-six)
La paciencia se me ha ido hasta los pies
(Patience has sunk down to my feet)

Y voy deshojando margaritas
(And I go plucking daisy petals)
Y mirando sin mirar
(And wondering without looking)
Para ver si así, te irritas y te vas
(
To see if you get irritated and leave)

Live Performance:

Ideas for an English version.
No, don't tell me reasons why
Don't try to insist
Your reasons, weren't they just another lie?

No, don't look at me that way
Don't say how I'm missed
Your words are just a lethal game you play.

I'm going to ask you never to return
I still feel how you hurt me here inside
In my heart
And at your age, you know well what it is
To break the heart of someone else like this.

No, no-one can live with so much passion
The hope that your love gave me
No-one else gave me before
I swear, I do not lie.

No, no-one can die with so much passion
No-one can devote their soul
Trying again and again
Anger weighs down like coal.

I hope you don't expect I'll wait for you.
Since turning twenty-six
Patience has sunk down to my toes
So here I am counting daisy petals
Wondering without looking
To see if you'll get fed up now and go.

Cœur de Pirate — Francis

Cœur de Pirate
— Francis

English translation.
Original French lyrics by Beatrice Martin

Francis, you have so much to say
But it all stays locked inside
And when you know not what to say
That’s when the tears begin to slide.
But to your fans, it wouldn’t seem
You had anything to hide
You encourage them to dream,
And all your secrets you confide.

Francis, the words stay firmly glued
In front of this girl who wants
Nothing more than to be wooed
But you don’t know that’s what she wants.
Your throat tightens and you go dumb
Your heart beats fast every time
The sight of her makes you numb
So scared, you don’t act in time.

Chorus:
As for me, I won’t forget you
And I trust that you’ll help spur
Those who feel the same for you
As you write in your songs for her.

Francis, I just want you to know
I’ll be leaving very soon,
I will think of you, you know
Each time my fingers play your tune.
Remember how we were enthralled,
And never will you lose heart
So long as you'll not be falled
By those who’d rather tear apart.

Chorus

Hille said: This was truly lovely, I love french music but had never heard of her before, reminded me of many sweet and child-like female voices who I am a fan of like Emiliana Torrini, Stina Nordenstam and Lisa Ekdahl. Thanks for the translation, spot on!
okei said: Really glad you enjoyed this. I love her voice and from an interview I heard she seems like a really sweet person. I once bought a CD by Nordenstam when I was a big fan of Enya, but don't listen to that kind of thing much now. I haven't heard of the other two names you mentioned. But Coeur de Pirate is alive and vibrant somehow as well as being child-like, more like world music which I love...I'm very tempted to buy her album.  Edit: I did buy her album!

Cœur de Pirate — Lève les voiles

"Lève les voiles" has a double-meaning, both "raise the sails" & "cast off the veils". Below are the original lyrics of Coeur de Pirate (Beatrice Martin) and my translation into English. Thanks to Catherine Armant for reassurances that the interpretation is good.

Lève les voiles

Lève les voiles, ô voilier blanc      Lift up the sails, o white sailboat
Mais lève au vent qui tourne          But lift up to the winds that bend
Lève les voiles sur d’autres chemins  Lift up the sails on fresh travails
Rêvant de voir la fin                 Dreaming to see the end

Tombée d’étoiles                      Fallen from the stars
Cette nuit qui chante                 This night that sings
De vivre au gré du temps              To live as time should will

Mais lève les voiles, ô voilier blanc Lift up the sails, o white sailboat
Mais lève quand tourne le vent        But lift up to the winds that bend

Catherine said: Ah, ... adorable, so lovely. This little Song feels so good. And I love your interpretation of the French words, I really do. It is just perfect. Thank you very much for this.
Nancy said: Wonderful song!

Lhasa de Sela — El Desierto

Lhasa de Sela (1972-2010)
— El Desierto (The Desert)

He venido al desierto para rear de tu amor
(I've come to the desert to laugh at your love)
Que el desierto es más tierno y la espina besa mejor

(As the desert's more tender and the thorn kisses better.)
He venido a ese centro de la nada pa' gritar
(I've come to this middle of nowhere to shout)
Que tú nunca mereciste lo que tanto quise dar
(That you never deserved what I wanted to give so badly.)

He venido yo corriendo, olvidándome de ti
(I've come running, trying to forget you)
Dame un beso pajarillo, y no te asustes colibrí
(Give me a kiss little bird, don't get frightened humming bird)
He venido encendida al desierto pa' quemar
(I've come on fire to the desert to burn)
Porque el alma prende fuego cuando deja de amar
(Because the soul is set alight when it stops loving)

Lhasa explains her father's philosophy about growth and breaking free, which inspired her song "soon this space will be too small".

Each time we reclaim our freedom and break through the barriers that enclose our world, we come into a new and bigger world and face new barriers and circumstances. new dangers, new choices and new freedoms to be re-claimed. Just as the baby in the womb must think, "this is it!" at birth, so we think at death. But is it? Or are we too smart for our own good.

Arjuna said: A very beautiful & a very wise person. Loved the song, your translation, and her thoughts on growth.
Eden said: I think she is beautiful as well, so sad to hear she has died. I too loved the song, the words and the story of her father's idea. I've added these to my favorites. Thank you for introducing her to us.
Kathy said: To return with such a memorable tribute is so very good of you to share, Okei. You are among a few friends who stole some time away recently, and it is nice to have you return. Hope your visit with your family was a pleasant one. ~ Blessings!

okei said:  Thanks all! I would like to continue the arc of thought of her father... it makes me think of Freedom. We are all enclosed by our world and circumstances in various ways. And we must find our freedom within this world, to reclaim that which is ours. And sometimes this means to break down barriers into a new and bigger world, but this involves facing more unpredictability, more dangers and more choices... with more freedoms, and yet we are still not truly free...

Indeed, she has a very distinctive face, perhaps because of her native American roots. They call her a Mexican/American/Canadian singer, but she was beyond those kinds of labels. (And she sang songs in Spanish, French and English.)

Cesária Évora & Marisa Monte — Mar Azul

Cesária Évora & Marisa Monte
 — Mar Azul (The Azure Sea)

Nunca no zanga We've never quarreled
Nunca no tive um briga feia We’ve never had a serious argument
Nunca no pensa na separaçon We’ve never thought of parting
Nunca no fri nos coraçon Or wounded each other

Deus ta leva-no sempre assim May God always keep us this way
Na paz, amor e carinho In peace, love and affection

Na otra vida tem tempestade For life is made up of storms
Vento do norte, vento do sul North winds, south winds

Ma sperança di mar azul But the hope of the azure sea
É pa quem tem fé na sê amor. Bears up those who believe in their love.

Speak in Sympathy (Solar Stone feat. Elizabeth Fields)

This was my first ever post on Multiply, and now my first on Blogspot too.
One of my favourite songs ever! (with hopefully correct lyrics unlike all the incorrect ones online)

From 'Lost Language' (2002) by Solar Stone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeE6G9i9UNA
Speak in Sympathy (Solar Stone feat. Elizabeth Fields)

The summer's breeze blows soft and slow
And in my arms I know you know.
The change of seeds we so gently sow

Can only grow and grow.

-----Refrain-----
And when I'm lost, you speak in sympathy
And when I'm tired, you breathe life into me
And when I'm hurt, you put your arms around me
And when I'm cold, you find the warmth inside of me.

The morning dew lies on the leaves
And what's left between is you and me.
The song thrush calls and it speaks to me (you and me)
You're the only matter to me I ever need to hear.

-----Refrain-----

And so the trees bend in the breeze
And I find strength in all I feel
The softest touch you give to me (you and me)
You're the only matter to me I ever need to hear.

-----Refrain (x3)-----
